Galveston Historical Foundation: Preserving History on Galveston Island
Just a short drive southeast of Houston lies Galveston Island, a storied barrier island rich in maritime history, diverse architecture, and cultural legacy. Much of this heritage is preserved and brought to life by the Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF), a non-profit dedicated to restoring the island’s most treasured landmarks and sharing its stories with the world.
Among its historic attractions is the Texas Seaport Museum, where visitors can explore Texas’ seafaring past. We spoke with John Schaumburg III, Assistant Director of the museum, to learn more about the foundation’s mission and how MOVA Globes have become a visitor favourite.
About the Galveston Historical Foundation
Founded in 1954, the Galveston Historical Foundation is one of the nation’s largest local preservation organizations. Over the decades, its mission has expanded to include community redevelopment, public education, historic preservation advocacy, maritime preservation, and stewardship of historic properties.
Today, GHF represents over 2,000 members—including individuals, families, and businesses from across Texas, the U.S., and abroad— and plays a vital role in shaping the culture and economy of Galveston Island.
Its historic sites include the 1877 Barque ELISSA and the 1892 Bishop’s Palace, both iconic landmarks that showcase the island’s rich history.

Where to Find MOVA Globes
MOVA Globes are available at Eighteen Seventy One, located in Galveston’s Strand National Historic Landmark District, as well as in the Texas Seaport Museum Shop.
Purchases from Eighteen Seventy One directly support the preservation and revitalization of Galveston Island.
Why Visitors Love MOVA Globes
Many visitors can’t pass by without stopping to watch the globes spin. They’re fascinated by how they work and appreciate the wide variety of designs and reliable warranty.
Some guests note that MOVA Globes are a great way to spark children’s interest in geography. At the Texas Seaport Museum, visitors often connect the globes to what they’ve learned about the tall ship ELISSA’s global sailing routes during its time as a merchant vessel.
How to Support the Foundation
There are many ways to support GHF:
- Visit historic sites like Bishop’s Palace, the ELISSA, Pier 21 Theater, and the Architectural Salvage Warehouse
